A dental sealant is a thin, plastic/acrylic coating applied on the chewing surfaces of teeth. Sealants act as a barrier, preventing bacteria and plaque from settling into the deep ridges of the teeth. The chewing surfaces of molars and premolars are the most likely areas for cavities in children. These surfaces feature deep ridges that are difficult to keep clean, making them highly susceptible to tooth decay. Dental sealants provide an extra layer of protection for children, helping to prevent decay and cavities.

request an appointmentWHO SHOULD GET SEALANTS?
For children between the ages of 6 and 16, getting sealants is a healthy and affordable way to prevent cavities. Although brushing and flossing each day is key to maintaining dental health, sealants can provide additional protection against decay-causing bacteria and food particles.
ARE SEALANTS SAFE?
Sealants are safe, as they are made of a plastic resin and are applied by the dentist. They protect the tooth enamel from cavities by filling the natural pits and grooves of the tooth surface and creating a barrier against bacteria and acids. They can last for several years and can be easily replaced if they become damaged or worn out. Their biocompatible nature makes them blend in perfectly with the teeth and surrounding soft oral tissues.
DO SEALANTS REALLY WORK?
According to studies, four out of five cavities in American children occur on the molars and premolars. Sealants bond into the depressions and grooves of the teeth and form a protective shield over the enamel. They are highly effective in the prevention of cavities; in fact, they can reduce the risk of decay by 80 to 95%.
HOW ARE SEALANTS APPLIED?
Cavities are quite serious because children have much more vulnerable teeth. Cavities can lead to pain, infection, and tooth loss, all of which can have a lifelong impact on a child’s oral health.
Applying sealants is a quick and painless procedure that can usually be completed during the same office visit as your child’s regular dental cleaning. Sealants are easily applied by our dentist without any drilling or removal of the tooth’s enamel. We will remove the decay from the tooth, clean the surface of the cavity, and apply the sealant in thin coatings. They will be hardened using a curing light, and the process is repeated. Once completed, we will check for a perfect bite and make any changes if required.
