A surgical extraction is the complete removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. The procedure may sound painful, but we make sure our patients do not feel any such discomfort. In fact, surgical extractions are among the most straightforward dental procedures that can be completed in a single visit to our dental practice.
Dr. Engle is a native Arlington resident with over 30 years of experience in the dentistry field. He has performed surgical extractions numerous times and gives his patients the best care possible in a comfortable environment.

A surgical extraction is recommended when your tooth is severely decayed, broken below the gum line, or impacted. It may also be recommended if you have severe periodontal disease. We carry out dental extractions under local anesthesia to prevent pain and discomfort during the surgery.
WHAT DOES A SURGICAL EXTRACTION INVOLVE?
Surgical extractions first involve the use of an anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding areas to ensure a comfortable procedure. The dentist then makes a small incision in the gum to reveal the underlying bone and tooth. They may remove some bone from around the tooth if necessary. The dentist will then hold the tooth with forceps and carefully remove it.
Simple extractions can be completed quickly, without any complications. However, broken or impacted teeth may be trickier to remove in one piece. In such cases, the dentist will section the tooth into smaller fragments and remove them individually. You don’t need to worry about any pain, as all you will feel is a mild sensation of pressure when the tooth is removed.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SURGICAL EXTRACTIONS?
Surgical extractions can help reduce post-surgical complications and the risk of infections. Additionally, patients who receive surgical extractions are less likely to have problems with swelling and bleeding and will recover and heal quicker than patients who receive non-surgical extractions.
Getting a tooth extracted at the right time keeps you from enduring pain and discomfort due to the damaged, decayed, or impacted tooth. It also prevents any damage to the adjoining teeth or soft tissues surrounding the tooth.
